Everyone learns to speak their native language. Are there some things that kids are missing when they are growing up?
Dr. J. Marvin Brown says that “both adults and children can do it right, but only adults can do it wrong.”

So why can’t we use the same approach with a second language? Why can’t we learn conversational English like children, easily and without a lot of effort?

In fact, we can. Many researches show that adults can learn languages even more easily and fast.

However, here is the thing. We need to forget all that we learned in school because it is the most important reason why we cannot speak American English at all. That’s the reason why we don’t understand anything when American people are talking to each other. Yes, we can read American and English newspapers, but this language is not the same. The people are not speaking that way. Their speech is different. If we want to understand Native American speakers and speak with them, we must find the different way.

In 1984, the American University Language Center in Bangkok started using a new approach to teach the Thai language. The method is known as “Automatic Language Growth”.
The first mistake they noticed is that adults were trying to speak a new language too early. They didn’t have enough exposure to language yet and they were struggling and felt uncomfortable. They were bringing patterns from their first language and later they were speaking with a strong accent.

In the beginning, children are just listening to the new language. They start to speak when they are prepared. That’s the big difference.

The second mistake adults make is that they think that they must study grammar. That’s a huge mistake, a vital mistake. Children do not study grammar and that’s the key. If we want to learn conversational English, we must learn to speak, not grammar. Learning American English grammar does not make you fluent. You must train your ears and you must train your mouth.

So how can we learn to speak without grammar? It’s simple; first of all, we must listen every day for one or two hours. The more is the best. We must listen to easy and understandable content. That builds our confidence. In addition, we must begin to speak only when we are prepared . When we can do this without struggling, it comes automatically. Believe me. I have done this with Original Effortless English Lessons.

It is a totally new approach for learning English. It is real language learning. You can learn conversational English naturally just as I did. Just click on the picture below and read more information about the Effortless English System.

Learn American accent and be better understood

In order to be understood we need to learn to speak clearly. How we can do this? Usually when we are learning to speak in English, we are using our native language’s sounds of pronunciation on our new language. That’s because we were never taught of these sort of things at school. This is what gives us an accent. English language has its own set of “speech rules”.

That’s a big problem because such speaking leads to misunderstanding. Poor American accent is affecting our job prospects. On the other hand improving our American accent can really help to improve our communication with native speakers and also can improve our job prospects.

There are many schools which teach English. However, as we already know, most of them are focused on grammar rules and word lists. Very few of them teaches the special “speech rules” we need to use in real world. That’s because many of the teachers are not native English speakers and they don’t know of these “speech rules”. Many teachers are even making errors themselves, speaking with a strong regional accent and teaching it to you!

In the most of English classes teachers are teaching written English. The students are “studying English” instead of listening and speaking and the students are not prepared to a real speech in a real world. Usually they can do well at English tests, but they can’t understand native speakers and the native speakers can’t understand them.

If you are often asked to repeat yourself when you speak English then you definitely need to improve your accent. To master your new American accent however, you must immerse yourself in the audio training by listening to the speaker and repeating the exercises many times.

There is a special course from speech language pathologist Esther Bruhl – American accent. Check this out:

What sayings would basketball fans use when they hate the fans of opposing team? (except obscene ones) ?

I would be so grateful, cause I need those colloquial sayings for my paper

Question by Pfargtl: What are some short-to-medium length plays that are complex enough for AP English?
I am creating my study plan for the AP English exam and I would like to study two more play to prepare for the exam. What are some really good plays that I could study quickly but are complex enough for AP? I don’t plan to use SparkNotes or any of that sh!t to study.

I have already read and am comfortable with reviewing “The Piano Lesson” by August Wilson, so don’t suggest it. Also, try not to suggest Shakespeare or any other Elizabethan playwrights.
*plays. I forgot to pluralize it in my description

My AP English class read Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House” – a 19th century protofeminist, Norwegian play which I would recommend.

Copenhagen, Denmark (PRWEB) May 13, 2008

The ability for kids to learn English as a second language is becoming more important in today’s world. Between new technologies leading to more international economic interaction and immigration issues in English-speaking nations, the ESL demand is continually growing. If these trends continue, today’s youngest generation will have an even greater need to learn English in coming years (such as to increase their educational or job opportunities). To help today’s children better become global citizens of tomorrow, Mingoville (Mingoville.com) is making its online English course for kids completely free.

The current immigration levels in the UK are a prime example of the need for programmes like Mingoville, offering free online English for kids. As reported by Telegraph.co.uk in April, “some 14.4 per cent of primary pupils now come from non-English-speaking homes — a figure that has doubled since 1997.” It was further reported that “in inner London, the proportion is a staggering 53.6 per cent of all pupils.” In other areas of the world, such as China, growing economies have contributed to increases in spending by families wanting to educate children in the English language. According to a survey conducted by China Mainland Information Group, the Chinese are spending $ 770 – 1540 USD per child on English language education in some of China’s large cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Canton.

Mingoville’s creators understand that children learn English best when learning is fun. This “edutainment” model allows children to learn English by clicking, doing, exploring, and interacting — comprehensive virtual language immersion based on advanced technologies and the newest pedagogical knowledge. This immersion allows students to learn through a variety of methods such as direct interaction with the exercises and games, visual learning, and audio elements to help students perfect their English pronunciation.

Kids learn English somewhat differently than many adults expect, which is why there is no instruction in the student’s local language when using the Mingoville online learning application. “We have experienced that when we launch this product in developing countries, teachers and parents can be resistant to it,” says Mingoville’s CEO, Stephan Stephensen. “From a Scandinavian research perspective, however, we have found that children learn a new language best when they have to listen to the language all the time. By not allowing students to constantly look up words, Mingoville enables them to learn English the fun way through a more holistic experience where kids are learning by doing.”

While Mingoville’s free English lessons for kids are designed primarily for students from ages of 8-12, kids as young as five can successfully complete the English games for children, and even older teens and adults learning English as a second language can benefit from Mingoville’s intuitive interface. Students can register for a free account to continue their English language studies online at their own pace from anywhere with an Internet connection, or they can access Mingoville’s ten missions and several hundred exercises in spelling, speaking, listening, and reading by logging in as a guest.

Question by : English teachers: is this okay?
I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to teach grammar. I have a narrowed grammar down to what I think is really important for them to know (proper sentence structure, punctuation, sub/verb agreement, correct pronoun reference, capitalization, modifiers, run-ons, plurals, fragments, etc). I have made a short PowerPoint for each of these objectives and I plan to do a “mini-lesson” on one grammatical “issue” at the beginning of every class, do an independent activity/ worksheet of some kind, and then talk about what we’ve gone over as we read a story. I teach 9th and 11th grade, and I plan to use the same Power Points for both grades. After all, the grammar is the same for both grades. Does this sound okay? I am only a 2nd year teacher. I am not completely secure with how I go about doing things, and I welcome all help. (As a side note– I plan to have them write constantly, putting what we’ve learned in our mini-lessons into practice.)

Answer by MaxSeven
If I were you, I’d be directing the question to the students and not other english teachers

The content of your lessons should show many examples of what NOT to do in written or spoken english, and then a discussion of why the examples are incorrect, and how they should be properly formed. For example, include something like: “I should have went to the dentist last week.” Then ask the students if they think the sentence is written correctly or incorrectly. If not, then why? You could also, for added interest, talk about why certain rules of grammer are confusing. Mispronounced words are always fascinating to learn about as well, such as “heighth” vs “height.”
